This is an exciting opportunity to work with Indigenous fire managers across the southern, central and east Kimberley. The Kimberley Land Council are looking for expressions of interest for the role of Regional Fire Officer.

Based in Broome the Regional Fire Officer (RFO) is responsible for developing, planning and implementing fire operations with Native Title groups and other external and internal stakeholders across the Kimberley. The RFO will help design and implement early burning programs with Traditional Owners and Ranger Fire Officers in order to protect and conserve native vegetation and species in collaboration with traditional methodologies and contemporary practices.

The RFO will empower Kimberley Traditional Owners to take control of fire management within their own Native Title areas training Indigenous land managers to plan, design, budget and implement their own fire programs in the future. The position will work closely with, and report to, the KLC’s Strategic Fire Operations Officer.

This position will require extensive and frequent travel across the Kimberley for extended periods during the early (Mar – July) and late (September – December) dry season.

Selection Criteria

  1. Qualification in conservation, land management, fire control or demonstrated experience in relevant field;
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to write reports for a range of audiences and to communicate sensitively and effectively with both indigenous and non-indigenous stakeholders;
  3. Highly organised, able to meet deadlines and excellent attention to detail;
  4. Understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal social and cultural challenges in Northern or Central Australia and willingness to commit to community empowerment, training and development;
  5. Ability to manage a broad range of stakeholders with different views and interests;
  6. A collaborative attitude with a high degree of integrity and an ability to work well in a team, independently, and with colleagues and partners across the region and country;
  7. Preparedness to travel including by air;
  8. 4WD competence including certification in 4WD recovery; and
  9. Current drivers’ licence for Manual vehicle.

Salary and Benefits

12-month contract, an attractive salary package including a level L6 base salary (negotiable on experience) with significant benefits including 5 weeks’ annual leave, time off in lieu, relocation, leave loading, district allowance, rental subsidy, air conditioning subsidy, an annual airfare (subject to qualifying period) and the option to salary sacrifice up to $15,889 per annum.
