Greenpeace New Zealand are looking for a Programme Director to lead, plan, design and deliver GPNZ’s programme of campaign, mobilisation, communication, investigations and non-violent direct actions (NVDAs).

The purpose:

This role has multiple purposes including to provide leadership and management to the whole of Greenpeace New Zealand as a member of the Senior Management Team, alongside the Fundraising Director, the Organisational Support Director and the Executive Director. The members of the Fundraising and Organisational Support teams are critical to achieving the overall kaupapa of the organisation.

You will be required to provide strategic leadership to the planning, design and delivery of an ambitious and courageous programme of Greenpeace campaigns which aim to prevent catastrophic climate change and save the remaining biodiversity of this beautiful planet.

This programme of campaigns needs to fit within our theory of change, which is that it will take mobilised people power to change the world for the better. We need to build the Greenpeace organisation and we need to use that organisation to help build a people’s movement alongside our
allies.

You will be using your highly effective leadership skills to lead and manage the Programme Team. This Team includes experienced specialists in mobilisation, communications, investigations, and non-violent direct action as well as lead campaigners and generalist campaigners. As part of the Programme Team, the Programme Director provides strategic leadership, enables creativity and support to help this team to be the best they can be.

Key tasks:

  • Provide strategic leadership to the planning, development and implementation of programme strategy;
  • Ensure that our campaigns are nationally and globally relevant, and are highly engaging in order to build people power;
  • As part of our commitment to te Tiriti o Waitangi, ensure that our programme work is consistent with te Tiriti, and where possible build strong campaigning alliances with Iwi and hapū;
  • Ensure proper and highly effective management. Determine priorities, assign responsibilities and support the team to deliver;
  • Identify staff development needs and ensure team members are developed effectively and that performance is effectively managed;
  • Support fundraising initiatives through integration with programme plans and developing cross organisational project teams to achieve this;
  • Transparent and effective reporting of programme performance to the ED, SMT and where relevant to other NROs we are working together with, and the Board;
  • Act as senior spokesperson on programme and organisational issues as required and actively represent Greenpeace to achieve campaign objectives and strengthen the profile and credibility of the organisation.

  • Demonstrated management experience in creating and developing effective teams;
  • High level of emotional intelligence;
  • Good at giving and receiving constructive feedback;
  • Understanding of the role of Te Tiriti in campaigning;
  • Values and supports diversity and inclusion;
  • Able to act as a media spokesperson.
