Deakin University is seeking voluntary Category C members (Animal Welfare Advocates) to join the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) in Geelong, Victoria.

The membership of the AEC is determined by government legislation where the Category C member must be a person with demonstrable commitment to and established experience in furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may meet the requirements of this category. While not representing an animal welfare organisation, the person should, where possible, be selected on the basis of active membership of and endorsement by, such an organisation.

Background: The primary responsibility of the AEC is to assess applications to use animals for scientific purposes and teaching in line with the requirements of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes 2013 (the Code) and relevant government legislation.

Meetings: The AEC meet in person up to six times a year at the Deakin University Waurn Ponds Campus.

Remuneration: This is a voluntary position, with an annual honorarium payment of $1000.
