About us

The Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) is an independent statutory office accountable to the Victorian Parliament established to protect the rights and enhance the position of people with disabilities in Victoria.

About the role

Advocate Guardians act under delegation from the Public Advocate. You will be authorised to make decisions and undertake advocacy in the best interests of the person under guardianship (the represented person). The scope of the role varies depending upon the authority provided in the VCAT order, but typically includes decisions in regard to where a person may live, what medical treatment they receive and the services they may require. In this role, you will:

  • Act as a guardian for people with disabilities, making complex decisions about lifestyle and medical treatment issues in situations which may involves significant conflict. This may include making decisions in emergencies and after hours
  • Provide individual advocacy for people with disabilities who are at risk or who are experiencing exploitation, abuse or neglect
  • Prepare and present written and oral reports to VCAT and other courts and tribunals as required.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • Demonstrated sound knowledge of at least one aspect of the Victorian human services sector (disability, mental health or aged care).
  • A good understanding of the issues relating to disability, including mental illness and age related disability. Familiarity with the NDIS is desirable but not essential.
  • Sound decision making skills.
