We need you to make Australia’s largest businesses treat their customers fairly. CHOICE is looking for a Senior Campaigns and Policy Adviser to join a high-performing team of advocates that fight for fair, safe and just markets for Australian consumers.

This is a chance to change the big problems that everyone has to deal with - unfair business practices, confusing products and industries that put consumers last.

We need you to tackle one or more of our priority market areas: health insurance, banking or food. You may have deep expertise in one of these areas or have general campaigning nous that can be applied to any problem.

  • Planning and executing advocacy campaigns that will lead to better functioning, more affordable markets for Australians.
  • Implementing and assessing strategies that use the power of consumers to influence major decision makers and political processes.
  • Appearing on TV, radio and at public events as an expert CHOICE spokesperson on the issues that you are working on.
  • Decoding problems in simple, compelling terms to explain how they affect all Australian consumers.
  • Researching and writing policy submissions and recommendations for changes to laws, and preparing briefs on policy issues for use in meetings and public appearances.
  • Collaborating with experienced campaigns and policy experts, innovators, investigative journalists and communications gurus, and mentoring junior campaigns and policy staff.

About You

You’re creative and passionate about achieving change using a combination of people power, well-researched policy, effective use of the media, and direct engagement with decision-makers. This is a senior role within the CHOICE Campaigns and Policy Team - you will succeed in this role if you have experience in digital advocacy or policy development and analysis.

The successful candidate will eventually need to demonstrate expertise in both campaigning and policy, but we are interested in interviewing people with substantial experience in one of the two areas, and the drive to develop skills in the other.

You live to make a difference and passionately believe in the power of people movements to influence governments or businesses to change their ways. You love wrapping your head around important issues and translating the detail to help people understand what really matters.

  • A creative thinker who plans ahead but can also respond quickly to new developments
  • A passionate campaigner who is motivated to make a difference in the lives of consumers
  • A great communicator with the ability and drive to help CHOICE lead national debates
  • Able to collaborate with and influence people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Able to conduct research on complex and varied topics, draw conclusions, make recommendations and express your ideas clearly.

Pre-existing knowledge of consumer law and consumer advocacy issues is a benefit but not essential. The ability to quickly develop an understanding of new and complex issues is essential.

Our purpose is to work for fair, safe and just markets that meet the needs of Australian consumers, and fighting for better laws and industry practices has always been core to how we do that.

CHOICE is an ethical workplace that walks and talks the organisational values Truth, Help and Impact. We care about our staff and take work-life balance seriously. Staff perks include an in-house bike fleet, staff veggie garden and regular social-committee events, plus the chance to work on our staff-led social and environmental impact initiatives that have helped our organisation become officially carbon neutral.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive workplace creates a positive working environment for all employees that helps us better represent Australian consumers. We're committed to accessibility and flexibility in the workplace and encourage applications from a diverse range of people.
