AVI supports the implementation of the Australian Volunteer Program (AVP) on behalf of the Australian Government. The program sends Australian volunteers on assignments overseas that are designed to sustainably build the capacity of people, organisations, communities and institutions. Through meaningful volunteer assignments, the Program creates enduring links between Australians and people and organisations in partner countries.

This position will sit within the Australian Volunteers Program at AVI and support the program’s objective to increase Indigenous participation within the program, helping to implement the program’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. The position will coordinate Indigenous programs such as the Classic Wallabies Indigenous Exchange (CWIE), and provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander volunteers participating in Indigenous programs and in the broader Australian Volunteers Program.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Relevant experience working in programs with a strong Indigenous focus. Tertiary qualifications in international development, community services, arts, social or political science is also desirable
  • Program coordination/administration, training or experience working on an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program
  • Understanding of, and demonstrated experience and working with a diverse number Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and groups – such as volunteers, and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander organisations
  • Proven stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills
  • Proven high level organisation, project coordination and time management skills
  • Good skills in word processing, excel spread sheet, presentation and database software applications
  • Good interpersonal skills, cross-cultural skills, and the ability to develop effective working relationships at all levels of the organisation
  • Proven ability to apply sensitivity and diplomacy when the situation requires it
  • Ability and experience in providing care and support to program participants when required
