The Australian Services Union Victorian and Tasmanian Authorities & Services Branch protect our members working in diverse industries such as local government, social and community services, water, energy, transport, shipping, travel, info tech, airlines and clerical/administration. We are working on growing our membership and building their strength by improving density and activism within their workplaces.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a full time Organiser to be located in our Hobart office. We’re looking for someone who can recruit new members, develop our delegates, resolve members’ issues and negotiate for good outcomes in a range of industrial situations. We encourage applications for this role from current workplace delegates, experienced Organisers, people of all genders, from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. Experience as an Organiser is not necessarily required as we will support the right applicant to develop the required skills.

The primary focus of our Organisers involves working with members and workplace delegates, planning and implementing campaigns that build the strength of the union and delivering good industrial outcomes. You will be required to represent, and negotiate on behalf of, our members in individual and workplace disputes, advocate for them in tribunals such as the Fair Work Commission, develop new workplace delegates, build sustainable organising structures and develop appropriate recruitment strategies to recruit new members.

Please note that some travel throughout the State, an occasional overnight stay away from home and flexibility in start and finish times are an expectation of the role.

The successful candidate will have

  • Demonstrated commitment to trade union values
  • High level written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with, and develop the skills and confidence of, our members and delegates, with a strong focus on recruiting new members and delegates
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise work to achieve desired outcomes
  • Ability to work semi-autonomously
  • Demonstrated initiative, drive and resilience in an ever changing environment
  • A sound knowledge of the Federal industrial relations system, collective bargaining and individual industrial instruments
  • Computer literacy and keyboard skills
  • A current driver’s licence is essential
