AMCS is seeking an inspired President, passionate about marine conservation and ready to play a critical role in the fight to protect our oceans, for our National Management Committee - the ‘Board’. AMCS is undergoing an exciting period of unprecedented growth and remarkable impact. The world’s oceans are under threat like never before. As President, you will help to lead our dynamic organisation at this critical juncture in the future of our oceans.

Using your outstanding leadership skills and relevant experience, you will inspire and guide our highly committed Board and staff through these internally and externally changing landscapes.

A principled person with experience working in the NGO environment, you will have the demonstrated ability to provide strategic oversight to help the organisation achieve its goals. Your passion for fundraising will be evident through, either existing networks, or experiences gained in a similar organisation. Although a media profile or strong media relationships will be highly regarded, you must be comfortable publicly representing the organisation when required. You will have an active knowledge of the Australian political environment, ideally with the credibility to support AMCS advocacy in this area.

As President you will work closely and collaboratively with the Board, the CEO and executive staff of AMCS, as well as key political, community, business and Indigenous partners and stakeholders in Australia.

Purpose of the Position

The AMCS Constitution provides for the election of a National Management Committee (NMC), the ‘Board’, overseen by an elected National President.

The President is chair of the AMCS Board and chairs general meetings of members, including the Annual General Meeting.

The President is a leader of AMCS, providing vision and inspiration within the organisation, and a strong and credible public voice on behalf of the organisation.

The President ensures that the organisation implements Board approved strategic plans and budgets and maintains sound operational governance through an effective and supportive working relationship with the CEO.

  1. Chairing the National Management Committee.
    • Leading the Board in ensuring adherence to the AMCS Constitution and fulfilment of its Objects and Functions within the powers granted by the Constitution.
    • Chairing the meetings of the Board and overseeing its effective operation and administration.
    • Managing any matters relating to conflicts of interest within or affecting the organisation. Chairing the Annual General Meeting and other special meetings of AMCS members.
  2. Ensuring the organisation has a clear mission/vision and strategic plan which can deliver the Objects stated in the Constitution and meet the goals that are set over time.
  3. Ensuring the Board and staff, as well as the organisation generally, operates with the highest standards of corporate governance, ethics and transparency.
  4. Ensuring the sound financial management of the organisation.
  5. Overseeing and supporting the AMCS CEO, their employment and annual performance reviews.
  6. Supporting the strategic initiatives of the organisation, including conservation, communications, marketing and fundraising programs as appropriate.
  7. Representing AMCS as a spokesperson and advocate as appropriate.
  8. Working effectively with the Board, AMCS supporters and donors and with key political, business, science, community and Indigenous partners and stakeholders to support the organisation’s mission.

Time Commitment and Remuneration

The National President is a voluntary role and no fees are payable. The National President may seek reimbursement of any actual expenses incurred in the course of completing their duties.

The role will require a commitment of between ten to twenty hours per month as a result of:

  • Preparation for, and active participation (as Chair) in, Formal Board meetings (usually bi- monthly) and the AGM.
  • Meetings and correspondence with the CEO and senior staff on current matters, as required.
  • New Board Member orientation.
  • Annual performance review of the CEO.
  • Attending at special events such as Fundraisers, Staffing event and Board events.
  • Attending relevant professional development.

Other requirements

  • Successful police check.
  • Compliance with ACNC requirements as a responsible person.
  • Successful candidates will need to become a member of the Australian Marine Conservation Society.
  • Any offer of positions is subject to endorsement by the members at the Annual General Meeting to be held in March 2019.
