The Team and the Role

The Community Organising Program is part of the Campaigns Directorate (alongside Climate and Nature Campaigns). Community Organising is a key part of ACF’s theory of change to create a sustainable future for generations to come. Our job is to build an unstoppable people powered movement that can help change the story on what’s possible and fix the underpinning systems that are locking us into environmental degradation.

The Organising team’s day to day work includes recruiting, supporting and training volunteer leaders to be effective advocates for change, empowering sustainable and powerful community groups to take collective action We work closely with our Campaigners and Engagement colleagues to ensure our active community are running co-ordinated, impactful campaigns to protect nature, stop fossil fuel developments and transform to a renewable economy.

The Lead Organiser is a new position for ACF that will be primarily focussed on building a powerful and impactful movement across Australia to protect nature and ensure a safe climate into the future. The Lead Organiser will provide strategic oversight of key elements of the Community Organising program, develop and deliver training and will lead, motivate, manage and develop the leadership and skills of Community Organisers in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

In the first year, the new Lead Organiser can expect to focus on:

  • Setting up the Sydney office and other efforts required to successfully expand ACF’s Community Organising staffing into Sydney and increase the community organising efforts in NSW
  • Recruit a new Community Organiser based in Sydney
  • Build successful relationships within the team, across the organisation and key allies and stakeholders
  • Provide strategic input into the community organising strategy to meet ACF’s newly adjusted 3 year goals
  • Continuous improvement in how the Community Organising team operates
  • Identifying training and development needs and managing the standardisation, organising and development of training curriculum for staff and volunteers as required
  • Support the develop of an implementation plan and project management approach for delivering the Community Organising team’s priorities and objectives in ACF’s 3 year plan

Your Skills

We are looking for a natural leader with significant experience in Community Organising. You’re passionate about movement building and continuously innovating to improve our practises. You’ll be a big picture strategic thinker who can take campaign and organising strategy and turn it into an implementation plan. You’ll be able to bring people along with you and delight in building the leadership of others. You’ll know how to lead and manage direct reports to be successful in their roles and achieve set goals.
