The Organisation

Mortgage Stress Victoria is a WEstJustice Program and leading community legal centre, providing free services to vulnerable and disadvantaged people from our new offices in the Melbourne CBD. We operate a multidisciplinary service, providing intensive legal, financial counselling and social worker support to Victorians experiencing mortgage stress.

At Mortgage Stress Victoria, we believe in a just and fair society where the law and its processes do not discriminate against people or cause them vulnerability. Mortgage stress and household debt is at concerning, record-high levels across Victoria, and we are facing uncertain economic times. We have an important role in developing a service that can offer effective support to Victorians in mortgage stress and scale our impact on the complex drivers and consequences of mortgage stress.

The Role

Mortgage Stress Victoria is seeking to employ a part time Legal Administrator, working two days per week, on a 12 month fixed term contract, to join our growing team.

You will provide administrative support & services to a multidisciplinary team including lawyers, financial counsellors & social workers.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Relevant experience in an administrative role – including use of Microsoft 365 and cloud-based client management and telephony software.
  • Sound organisational, time management and planning skills including the ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing demands under pressure.
  • Quick learner.
  • Highly developed active listening and communication skills including the ability to empathise and manage sometimes challenging clients.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and professional telephone manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexible, performance-oriented and proactive attitude with ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Interest in and commitment to the work of the service in promoting social justice and the rights of people experiencing disadvantage and vulnerability.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Mortgage Stress Victoria’s Vision, Purpose, Strategic Plan and Impact Areas.

Desirable

  • Experience in a fast-paced legal environment (e.g. community legal centre, legal aid and/or private law firm) or not-for-profit community organisation.
  • Experience supporting the data needs relating to measurement and evaluation frameworks.
  • Legal administrator experience.
  • Paralegal experience and/or commencement of law degree or similar.
