Position Purpose

Over the next five years, Soldier On has set a strategic fundraising goal to double revenue to $10,000,000.

The Executive Director Fundraising is responsible for achieving the goals set in the strategic fundraising plan and advancing the mission and objectives of Soldier On by leading the implementation and refinement of the fundraising strategy.

This position requires a dynamic individual with strong fundraising and leadership skills capable of transforming the fundraising of Soldier On over the next five years and beyond.

This position requires in-depth experience and expertise across all fundraising channels capable of achieving the strategi plan; proven and excellent leadership skills with the ability to lead and manage the fundraising team; a passion for fundraising, excellent communications and interpersonal skills.

The Executive Director of Fundraising will have a proven track record in meeting and/or exceeding fundraising targets.

The Executive Director of Fundraising is a member of the Soldier On Executive Team. This role is preferred to work from Soldier On Headquarters in Canberra ACT. Applicants outside of Canberra are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

Revenue Responsibility:

  • Set the budget for the fundraising team annually based on strategic plan targets and actual performance
  • Ensure the fundraising team meets or exceeds financial targets
  • Manage the revenue and expenditure budget for the fundraising team
  • Provide regular reports and updates to the CEO, GM and Board

Fundraising Strategy Development and Implementation:

  • Oversee the Fundraising team, Marketing and Communication Team, Income Generation Heads, and collaborate with Executive and the Board, to refine and execute the five-year fundraising strategy.
  • Develop and execute innovative fundraising strategies to generate revenue streams and ensure the sustainability of Soldier On.
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of our fundraising portfolio, striving to surpass income targets, expand regular giving initiatives, and identify operational efficiencies.
  • Provide support and direction to the Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships and the Head of Individual Giving to enhance the income generation programs and campaigns, encompassing initiatives such as donor acquisition, retention and donor development for individual giving; development of a strong major gift and corporate partnerships program; develop a long term bequests program and oversee the grants and foundations portfolio.
  • Assist the Heads of fundraising teams in ensuring portfolios are up to date with best practice and emerging trends in fundraising.
  • Guide the Heads of income generation in crafting and executing engagement strategies to approach potential major donors, corporates, charitable trusts, and other stakeholders effectively.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns, events, and appeals.

Team Leadership:

  • Effectively lead the Fundraising team, Marketing and Communication Team, Income Generation Heads and their teams, ensuring high motivation levels and adequate staffing coverage.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to the Individual Giving and Philanthropy and Partnerships team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop a high performing fundraising team through the Overseeing of recruitment, development, retention, and performance appraisals of the teams, adhering to organisational principles and processes.
  • Set clear performance expectations and goals for team members and conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Identify training and development opportunities to enhance the skills and capabilities of the teams.

Finance and Reporting:

  • Collaborate closely with the General Manager and Finance team to monitor and manage expenditure in alignment with organisational goals and fundraising strategy.
  • Develop business cases for investment and cost-saving proposals as necessary.
  • Prepare regular reports on fundraising activities, outcomes, and performance metrics for internal stakeholders and the board of directors.
  • Analyse fundraising trends and donor demographics to inform strategic decision-making.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in leading fundraising, donor relations, or related fields, with demonstrated success in securing major gifts and grants.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop strategies and operational plans
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising revenue targets
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strategic partnerships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire, develop and motivate a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate the mission and impact of the organisation to a variety of audiences.
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Knowledge of fundraising software and donor management systems is preferred.
  • Proven experience in fundraising strategy development and implementation, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Sound financial acumen and experience in budget management.
