Screen Programmers (Voluntary)

Environmental Film Festival Australia

Are you a film lover with a critical eye? Do you have an interest in environmental issues? Would you like to be part of a values-led organisation that champions art to create change? Environmental Film Festival Australia (EFFA) are looking for our newest Screen Programmers to support the curation of a strong environment-focused program.

What it’s like

As a Screen Programmer you play a vital role in EFFA’s curation by viewing and selecting high-quality and dynamic films to support the delivery of an impactful and successful program. While the team is predominantly based in Naarm (Melbourne), Screen Programming can be undertaken remotely.

Screen Programmers are allocated a list of films (including shorts and features) to watch on a fortnightly basis (usually around 5 hours of viewing), and also undertake guided research to identify films that match our programming pillars.

Topics explored include:

  • Experiences of environments
  • Indigenous rights and stories
  • Connection to Country
  • Urban life and architecture
  • The awe of nature, flora and fauna
  • Ecology
  • Climate catastrophe
  • Sustainability
  • The interconnection between people and place

You’ll connect with other programmers at a monthly online meeting to discuss the films and make programming decisions. There’ll also be opportunities to meet in person (dependent on your location) and undertake co-working sessions and co-viewings.

As a Screen Programmer, you will have a lot of flexibility in managing your programming commitments and working through your watch list at a time that suits you. For those interested, there’s also opportunities to get involved in film acquisition, licensing and liaising with filmmakers.

Programming roles typically run for 12 months, with the potential for extension.

We’re a small team, so you’ll get a chance to get involved in lots of different areas and will have a lot of autonomy. Self-starters and keen beans will particularly thrive.

About EFFA

EFFA is a volunteer community group, based in Naarm (Melbourne), that prioritises climate and environments through film, providing platforms for artists to showcase their work and spaces for people to connect and exchange ideas and solutions.

Our program navigates the relationship between humans and their environments and interrogates the way people think about the natural world. We feature films from the world’s most talented and socially-conscious filmmakers, embracing diversity and championing local, Indigenous, minority and creative voices.

We’ve been running since 2010, starting out as a weekend screening event in Palace Kino (as Environmental Film Festival Melbourne) and have since hosted festivals and events throughout Australia and online.

By joining EFFA, you’ll be part of a fun, social community of people who believe in the power of cinema to create change and environmental advocacy. In return, you’ll receive free tickets to screenings, the opportunity to network with other festivals and a chance to play a big part in EFFA’s development.

  • Platforming First Nations’ voices
