Based in St Kilda, the Port Phillip Community Group (PPCG) is a community-based organisation that seeks to build social cohesion and promote equitable access to services and opportunities for local residents.
The Social Support Mentor is a pivotal position in the implementation of a research project that will pilot and evaluate a ‘relationship focussed learning framework’. The project is designed to attract and retain highly disadvantaged people, thus increasing their readiness to learn and to actively engage in training, employment and lifelong learning pathways. The research project is being conducted in partnership with RMIT and Elwood St Kilda Neighbourhood Learning Centre.
Fundamental to the project is the building of relationships to provide practical and emotional support to individuals who are part of the learning group. It is recognised that such support is essential to enable highly disadvantaged people to engage in learning pathways.
Main role and Duties of the Position
- Work collaboratively as part of the project team
- Be involved supporting individuals in their decision whether to join the group
- Provide individual emotional and practical support and guidance to participant group members with the aim of enabling them to participate in learning activities
- Encourage goal setting and provide emotional and practical support to facilitate the achievement of goals
- Make referrals to relevant health, housing and social services
- Maintain constructive and respectful dialogue about the research process
- Ensure participant pathways beyond the funded project period are in place
- Meet regularly with project partners and project team.
