We are seeking a passionate and organised Digital Campaigner who can create engaging, shareable content, and implement digital strategies that will rapidly expand our community of supporters and amplify our voice in the crowded digital marketplace.

Who We Are

Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) and the environment groups we represent have been winning protections for nature in NSW for more than 60 years. We have been at the centre of many of the state’s iconic conservation battles and have notched up countless achievements for nature and local communities.

Today, we work to clean up the state’s dirty electricity system, end unsustainable tree-clearing on farms and in our forests, protect biodiversity, bring our rivers and coastal wetlands back to health, give marine life in our coastal waters the protection it deserves, and provide leadership on fire policy, education and ecology.

About the Position

The Digital Campaigner will work closely with other staff on our campaigns to deepen the engagement of our supporters and attract new donors. We have big plans for building a movement of active protectors of nature and a safe climate and are looking for someone to help make that happen.

This is a participant role in the Democracy in Colour’s People of Colour (POC) Placement Program - a 10 month on-the-job training program for emerging campaigners of colour. This program is about finding emerging campaigners of colour, supporting their talent, and pushing organisations to centre their voices for real, lasting change. The program places emerging leaders in paid traineeships in advocacy NGOs alongside a training and mentoring program run by Democracy in Colour. As part of the program, you will work 4 days per week within the Nature Conservation Council’s Communications and Campaigns Teams, and on average 1 day per week participating in training and professional development as part of the POC Placement Program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement digital strategies that meet our campaign and fundraising objectives, including the rapid growth of supporter and donor lists, and increased engagement.
  • Develop compelling digital content to share with our networks, motivate people to act, and engage new audiences.
  • Write emails that motivate supporters to increase their involvement in and commitment to our campaigns, including by donating.
  • Help maintain websites and social media accounts.
  • Help manage our online communications calendar and coordinate supporter, member group and donor engagement strategies.
  • Monitor, test and analyse recruitment and engagement strategies, and use tools and techniques to increase audience participation rates.

In a typical week as our Digital Campaigner you may:

  • Write a supporter email and use social media and texting to encourage people to attend an event.
  • Design a flier for a campaign to promote a local event.
  • Turn breaking news around a campaign into an explainer video for social media.
  • Work with the Senior Digital Campaigner to develop a digital plan to grow our supporter list around a campaign moment, such as a report launch, an event or government announcement.
  • Live tweet a community forum.

Selection Criteria

Talent & Capabilities

  • A passion for using digital tools to further social change.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather and analyse online behaviour data, conduct tests, and use the information gathered to fine-tune digital strategies and tactics.
  • Good ability to manage your time effectively and organise your work to tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.

Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated strong writing skills.
  • Experience in digital campaigning, including use of email, websites, social media, and other online platforms and tools.
  • Experience working with affected and diverse communities.
  • Lived experience of being a part of and working with communities of colour or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Extra Points for

  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling graphic designs and online content, including video.
  • Demonstrated success at crowd-funding.
  • Knowledge and experience with NationBuilder and Campaign Monitor platforms.
  • An understanding and appreciation of environmental issues.
