Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria works with people with mental illness, their families and friends to improve their well being. We employ over 250 staff who work across sites within Victoria and ACT on a range of innovative education, support, advocacy and rehabilitation programs.
We have a terrific opportunity for a Peer Support Program Worker to share their personal experiences of their recovery from mental illness, or homelessness, and to engage and empower individuals in their recovery journey.
The Peer Program Worker will join the newly established ‘Doorway’ team, which forms part of our innovative Private Rental Demonstration Project. The project draws on the recovery model to assist our participants with mental illness, who are also homeless or are at risk of homelessness, to enter /participate in the private rental market, a sector to which they normally have limited access.
You will work in collaboration with our participants to promote and support the development of lifestyle that meet the needs of the individual with regard to health, social inclusion, and securing and maintaining sustainable housing. You will also provide your knowledge to the Doorway team through your insight into the impact of living with mental illness and/or homelessness.
The Peer Program Worker will work closely with the Doorway team and will be supported and mentored by the Program Coordinator.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have had personal experience of a mental illness or homelessness
- Be comfortable to share experiences with the program participants
- Knowledge of mental health system and/or homelessness services is advantageous
- Be comfortable working independently as well as an active team member
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated understanding and genuine commitment to social inclusion and diversity.
