Who we are

The Environmental Defenders Office of Northern Queensland Inc. (EDO NQ) is a not-for-profit, non-government, community legal centre based in Cairns and specialising in public interest environmental law.

We provide access to justice on environmental issues. From advising on protecting drinking water near a mine site to advocating for the conservation of endangered species on World Cassowary Day and seeking reform of land clearing laws. These are just some of the issues where you can make a difference.

What we do:

For 21 years we have provided legal representation, advice and information to individuals and communities, in both urban and rural areas, regarding environmental law matters of public interest. We also deliver community legal education and undertake law reform activities. We provide services to communities in northern and far northern Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Who you are:

  • A lawyer with an unrestricted practising certificate and eligibility to practise in Queensland.
  • Experience in administrative, environment, planning or public law is useful.
  • Community minded – you foster enduring relationships with the strong and passionate network of environment groups in our region, you recruit and work with volunteers to provide our legal services and you foster partnerships with our stakeholders.
  • Motivated and resilient – you need to step up and rely on your can-do attitude.
  • Out-going and mobile– you like to get out of the office and see a wide range of environmental issues first hand and under your own steam (read unrestricted driver’s licence).
  • A good and well rounded communicator – you can write a sophisticated law reform submission and present to a parliamentary committee, convey a message to a Minister or the media in a few sentences and explain a complex development proposal process to a roomful of concerned citizens.
  • A manager who can oversee the running of a not-for-profit legal office, contribute to fundraising efforts and write an annual report.

A position description is attached.
