About The Climate Council

The Climate Council is Australia’s leading climate change communications organisation. We provide authoritative, expert advice to the public on climate change, energy and climate solutions and international action. The role

This is your chance to make an impact contributing to climate change action. Reporting to the Head of Research, you will be our go-to person for information on climate solutions such as renewable energy and transport.

This role will preferably be based in Melbourne however we will consider applications in Sydney also.

Key responsibilities

Writing reports and other content (60%)

Leading and delivering peer-reviewed reports and analysis on  climate solutions, particularly energy systems, renewable energy, transport, international action and the implications this has for Australia, including:

  • Working with the Councillors, research team and other external experts to produce reputable, reliable, high quality science-for-the-public resources. This includes producing reports, opinion pieces and website articles
  • Staying abreast of developments in research and projects relating to climate solutions
  • Creating presentation content and briefing documents for Councillors and staff on climate solutions
  • Providing media support on climate solutions-related topics – this includes being able to give accurate information to the media team and fact-checking media content in a short timeframe
  • Sourcing social media content – find relevant content for the community team (e.g. website articles and Facebook posts)  

Engaging with climate solutions professionals (20%)

Cultivating effective working relationships with identified climate solutions (e.g. energy, transport) researchers, policy influencers and key stakeholders in Australia to:

  • Stay up-to-date with current and planned climate solutions-related projects and policy issues
  • Gain deeper insights into emerging issues and research, identify useful information sources, to further develop report concepts and ensure reports reflect and respond to real world issues
  • Explore links, and where appropriate possible partnerships
  • Build stakeholder input into reports (for example, case studies).
  • Inform report planning and strategy, for example by identifying niche or emerging topics which are not being addressed by other climate and environmental organisations
  • Develop content for topics where limited published research is available, (for example household battery storage, electric vehicles and new energy information technology)
  • Identify possible peer reviewers
  • Representing the Climate Council in technical forums or meetings  

Strategic projects (20%)

  • Leading or contributing to the development and implementation of strategic projects where there is a direct connection to climate solutions (for example, summits or joint statements, board packs).
  • Managing external consultants undertaking pro-bono research and modelling relating to climate solutions, e.g. renewable energy.

About you

Required

  • Communication: Passion for writing and communicating with different audiences in plain English, for a range of mediums (for example, reports, opinion pieces, web articles, twitter).
  • Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding, experience or formal training relevant to solutions to climate change (for example, engineering, science, research background or relevant practical experience).
  • Process oriented: Ability to source and understand technical, industry and research reports and papers from a range of reputable sources, then synthesise/ translate and bring together key information into reports in accessible language to the general public. Able to work with senior colleagues to produce reports that are peer reviewed, coordinating and responding to technical and communications reviews.
  • Attention to detail: For example, checking facts, reviewing policy announcements, references and copyright permissions
  • Efficiency: Ability to research, scope and write reports in tight timeframes. Responding quickly to external events (for example, fact-checking announcements).  

Desirable

  • Engagement: Established networks with key climate solutions and policy influencers.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in sectors such as electricity, transport, industry or business would be highly regarded.
