Women’s Legal Service (WLS) is a leading not for profit community legal centre providing specialised legal and social support services to women experiencing family law, domestic violence and child protection related matters. 

Each year, WLS help thousands of Queensland women to obtain the legal and social support they need whilst raising the community’s awareness of domestic violence, advocating for increased and improved access to services and working with government and community stakeholders on meaningful law reform.

The Opportunity

We currently have a new and unique opportunity for an experienced Paralegal to join our recently funded Sexual Assault Counselling Privilege (SACP) legal service. This role will provide specialised paralegal and administrative support to the SACP Solicitor and will work closely with other administrative staff across WLS to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the WLS and its programs.

Your duties will include:

  • Helping to develop new processes, practices, procedures and precedents.
  • Assisting with managing client relationships and handling client enquiries.
  • Word processing and preparing and editing documents such as letters, file notes, court forms and briefs to counsel.
  • Managing hard copy and electronic files including opening and closing files.
  • Maintaining WLS databases and statistical records.
  • Managing calendars and emails.
  • Managing client referrals into the service. 

All WLS staff are also responsible for contributing to a collaborative team culture which is professional, productive, supportive and consistent with the WLS Values and feminist principles. 

This role is being offered as a 12-month contract position working part-time (3 days a week, 18 hours / week). 

Experience, Skills and Attributes

Applicants will ideally possess:

  • Demonstrated experience in performing paralegal and administrative tasks in a criminal law, family law or domestic violence legal environment including the management of hard and electronic files, the ability to digitally transcribe and prepare legal documentation.
  • A high level of computer literacy including experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, general database programs and office equipment.
  • Well developed and effective interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral including the ability to interact appropriately with vulnerable women from diverse backgrounds.
  • Exceptional time management, attention to detail and accuracy. 

Experience in subpoenas and criminal law processes at the District Court level will be viewed favourably but this is not essential. 

Remuneration and Benefits

  • An attractive remuneration package of $31,805 p.a + 9.5% superannuation. This is pro rata a full time salary of $67,143.88 p.a + 9.5% superannuation.
