About the TU ACT

The Tenants’ Union ACT is a specialist community legal centre based in Turner. We provide free legal advice to all renters in the ACT, including both tenants and occupants. TU members include private, public and community housing tenants, as well as boarders and lodgers, people living in student accommodation, caravan parks and emergency accommodation, and others interested in supporting the work of the TU.

We are committed to addressing the inequities that exist between renters and property investors. To tenants and occupants, our houses are our homes, but to the owner they are simply an investment. We are seeking a new staff member to help us to continue to provide a strong voice for tenants and occupants in the ACT.

The position

The TU ACT has an opportunity for a dedicated individual wishing to assist people renting in the ACT by providing legal advice through our Tenants’ Advice Service.

Key duties:

  • Staff the Tenants' Advice Service phone line, 20 hours/week, covering advice shifts of minimum 3 hours, flexible hours
  • Answer tenancy inquiries in accordance with legal advice supervision protocols
  • Keep accurate up to date records of all advice

This is a paralegal position, however legal qualifications are not essential.

A working knowledge of ACT tenancy law, or ability to quickly learn it is necessary, as is some experience providing advice or assistance to a wide and diverse range of people. Demonstrated experience with use of Microsoft Office suite and client databases is also necessary.
