An exciting opportunity has become available in the Salvos Legal Humanitarian Team, to provide immigration support to asylum seekers through the protection visa application process. Reporting to the Partner, you will be responsible for coordinating, managing and supervising the Asylum Seeker Clinic (ASC) as it provides immigration support to people seeking asylum. This is a hands on role suited to a skilled, driven and compassionate individual.


This role is 30.4 hours per fortnight, comprising of 1 business day per week from 9am-5pm and 1 business day per week from 1pm-9pm.

Essential Requirements include:

  • An understanding, empathy, appreciation and the ability to promote the values and ethos of The Salvation Army.
  • Hold registration to practice as a migration agent on a non-commercial basis.
  • An understanding of and commitment to addressing social justice issues impacting society.
  • Experience in refugee and immigration law.
  • Extensive experience working in protection and in preparing protection visa claims.
  • Extensive experience with the use of professional and lay interpreters in person and via telephone.
  • Experience in case-work with vulnerable clients of asylum seeker backgrounds.
  • Management and supervision of volunteers in interviewing clients for the purposes of and preparation of protection claims.
  • Organisation and delivery of training to community members and volunteers about international refugee law and policy and protection claims and processes.
  • Experience in researching and compiling country of origin information in relation to refugee and protection claims.
  • A detailed understanding of the process of the Fast Track assessment of claims.
  • Experience in preparing submissions for TPV / SHEV claims.
  • Extensive experience attending protection interviews.
  • Extensive experience responding to DIBP letters after submission of protection visa claims.
  • Understanding of the IAA process and experience providing advice regarding the IAA process.
  • Experience liaising with the DIBP on behalf of clients.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Experience in strategic development of projects.
