The Salvation Army Youth & Family Services operate a youth crisis accommodation refuge in North Fitzroy. The program works intensively with young people to address issues that contribute to their unique experience of crisis & homelessness, with a particular focus on assisting young people to:

  • Develop life and living skills to prepare for independence
  • Address issues in relation to health, AOD & mental health
  • Promote opportunities to overcome exclusion and isolation
  • Explore education pathways and participation
  • Work towards long term sustainable housing

The program operates a 7 day per week supported case management model and all staff are expected to actively participate in the life of the program and in the support of young people residing within.

We are looking for experienced people who are passionate, reliable, flexible and proactive about supporting vulnerable young people.

We have a range of casual relief shifts available throughout the week and on weekends between the hours of 3pm -7pm, 8am – 6pm, 5pm - 10pm, 5pm - 12pm + sleepover.

Opportunity for an agreed permanent part time role as a combination of these shifts will be considered for the right applicant.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A demonstrated understanding of the issues surrounding youth homelessness and a commitment to working with young people who are disadvantaged within the community.
  • A sound understanding of theories relating to trauma & attachment as they relate to services for young people who have suffered neglect and abuse.
  • A sound knowledge of the resources and services available in the community with respect to housing, health (inclusive of alcohol and other drug and psychiatric supports), legal, sexual assault, counselling services, income security and education and training supports.
  • Sound judgement and ability to make decisions when dealing with critical incidents & challenging client behaviours.
  • Well-developed client engagement skills.
  • Ability to work a range of casual & relief shifts as part of a team or working solo, including day, evening, weekend & overnight.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team delivering a range of services and to be independent and autonomous where necessary
  • Well-developed interpersonal communications, advocacy and negotiation skills.
  • Tertiary qualification in the human services field.
  • A current Victorian driver’s license is essential.
  • National Police Records Check and Working with Children Check is a mandatory requirement for this position.
