South West Brisbane Community Legal Centre (“the Centre”) promotes access to justice by providing free legal services to members of our community.

Purpose of Position

The purpose of the Child Protection Lawyer is to provide legal information, advice and discrete casework to clients, with a focus on child protection legal processes.

The position will include delivering legal services in partnership with Queensland Foster and Kinship Care.

Duration

The position is for a period of 12 months and will be extended if ongoing funding for the position is secured.

Responsibilities

Legal Advice and Casework Activities

  • Provide legal information, expert advice, direct advocacy and appropriate referrals to clients via appointments at outreach locations, by telephone and on-site at the Centre, with a focus on child protection law.
  • Undertake casework activities in accordance with the casework guidelines
  • Foster collaborative relationships with partner organisations for the benefit of clients
  • Review legal advices provided by volunteer solicitors, provide feedback and follow up any incomplete or inaccurate advice with clients
  • Perform child protection duty lawyer services as required

Community Legal Education and Law Reform

  • Identify need for community legal education.
  • Build co-operative  relationships for the delivery of community legal education.
  • Undertake community legal education activities, including presentations and participation in community forums
  • Identify areas of need for law reform submissions and undertake submission writing as required
  • Develop and maintain professional networks

Organisational Duties

  • Be aware of and comply with the Centre’s Risk Management Guide and the Centre’s policies and procedures
  • Participate in regular supervision and planning meetings.
  • Report any risk management issues to the Coordinating Lawyer
  • Foster a collegiate, supportive and productive team environment.
  • Be a positive influence on staff morale and take action to facilitate a positive working environment
  • Act as a role model for SWBCLC’s organisational culture.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Participate in strategic planning and team building activities undertaken by the Centre
  • Participate in professional clinical supervision – if necessary and in line with Centre’s policy
  • Contribute to reporting and feedback procedures
  • Undertake other duties as directed from time to time by the Coordinating Lawyer.

Selection criteria

Important

  1. Values: (a) Demonstrated commitment to social justice and providing access to justice to vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals. (b) Understanding of the impacts of disadvantage and trauma.
  2. Qualifications and experience: (a) Eligible to hold a practising certificate. (b) Demonstrated knowledge of the practice of law, in particular child protection law.
  3. Client services and file management: (a) Ability to provide legal services to clients with minimal supervision whilst ensuring adherence to case management procedures and managing client expectations as to the extent of service delivery.  (b) Ability to use high level interpersonal and written communication skills when assisting clients and convey complex legal information in a manner appropriate to disadvantaged clients.
  4. Teamwork and communication: Willingness to work effectively in close partnership with legal staff, administrative staff and other stakeholders in the planning, development and delivery of a professional and holistic service to clients of the Centre.
