About you

You are an energetic, organised and experienced lawyer with a passion for social justice and experience working in summary crime, as well as other relevant areas including fines, debts, guardianship/administration, VOCAT, discrimination, family violence, child protection. You will have an interest in working in a multi-disciplinary role which includes legal service delivery, community legal education and law reform.

You are proactive, friendly, and ready to work within our small team of staff and volunteers, as well as quickly and easily establish relationships with outreach partner organisations and other community organisations in the area. You are able to develop file management systems and processes that work for you, working with at time limited administrative resources. You are also willing to learn and grow in aspects relating your job which you might not be familiar with.

About this opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to provide a high quality, appropriate and targeted legal assistance to people experiencing disadvantage by way of legal outreach services located at partner community support services in the local area. This includes working with clients experiencing homelessness, drug or alcohol use, mental illness, an acquired brain injury, and/or clients who work as street sex workers.

What do you need?

  • Current legal practising certificate and at least 2 years post admission experience, with proven experience in the conduct of summary crime casework, as well as in a number of the following areas of law: discrimination, fines, debts, guardianship/administration, family violence, child protection, VOCAT.
  • Experience as a solicitor advocate in the Magistrates’ Court and at VCAT.
  • Good understanding of issues arising for individuals experiencing drug and alcohol use and/or mental health illness, and an ability to work within a harm minimisation framework.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with clients who have complex needs, are vulnerable and who may lead chaotic lifestyles.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, particularly in outreach locations, manage competing demands and work within a small staff team and with volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with target clients and key stakeholders including police, health and welfare service providers, in providing legal services and legal education programs in non-conventional settings.
  • Proven experience in balancing a high volume caseload coupled with strong administrative, organisational and IT skills.
