Snapshot of School for Life:

School for Life Foundation (SFL) is a not-for-profit organisation working in rural Uganda. We empower communities to help themselves and create their own opportunities. We do this by providing a quality education and associated services, including employment and healthcare.

Our flagship project Katuuso Primary and Vocational School can be found an hour and a half away from Uganda’s capital Kampala. In 2016, we opened our second school Mbazzi Riverside which is currently being used as a Primary School but will become a Secondary School in 2018.

To date we have raised more than A$5 million and mobilised the support of thousands of people around the world who have helped us: 

  • Educate 400 students annually across 2 campuses.
  • Employ more than 100 adults in related roles.
  • Train 15 and employ 10 women as tailors.
  • Provide 3 nutritious meals a day for all our staff and students.
  • Provide clean drinking water to the entire Katuuso community as well as staff and students of Mbazzi Riverside.
  • Provide a medical clinic for staff and students, and facilitate health care days for the whole Katuuso community.

SFL now seeks an adaptable, articulate and highly motivated education professional to help grow our organisation’s capacity on ground in Uganda.

Purpose of the position

The Education Specialist is School for Life Foundation's advisor on Primary and Secondary education programming in Uganda. He or she will be responsible for building teacher capacity, promoting excellence in teaching practice and improving learning outcomes. The Education Specialist will work closely with the school administration and Varkey Foundation, reporting directly to the Schools Director. The position will be based on the school grounds in Mpigi District (approximately 45 minutes west of Kampala), in a rural setting with modest accommodations. School for Life is opening a secondary school in 2018 at our second site and would value assistance recruiting teachers, setting up and curriculum delivery there.

The incumbent is required to make an 8-12 month commitment.

They do this through building teacher capacity, advocacy campaigns to promote excellence in teaching practice at the highest levels of policy making and providing grants to partner organisations that offer innovative solutions in support of their mission. School for Life partners with the Varkey Foundation on ground for professional development in line with our focus on the delivery of quality education.

Key roles and responsibilities

  • Working with school administrators and Varkey Foundation to ensure the effective delivery of education programming at SFL schools in accordance with Uganda's National curriculum for Primary and Secondary Schools.
  • Collaborating with school administrators to evaluate delivery of education in SFL schools and teaching methodologies, identifying the needs and designing interventions to improve learning outcomes.
  • Working with Varkey Foundation and school administrators to increase the use of activity-based learning, positive reinforcement and techniques to cater for different learning needs in all classrooms.
  • Following the Varkey Foundation's 'Instructional Leadership Training' program, promoting a culture of ‘student-led learning’ in the classroom with greater participation and exploration of ideas.
  • Providing leadership in researching new initiatives that lead to improved education outcomes for children, including literacy levels
  • Ensuring that staff are fully supported to develop the technical knowledge and skills necessary to achieve teaching excellence and offering additional training for staff who require additional support.
  • Identifying and developing new partnerships with local education-focused NGOs, Community Based Organisations (CBOs), international organisations and international schools to enhance education programming
  • Leading strategic planning implementation, ensuring work plans are in place to achieve targets and expected results; monitoring and evaluating program interventions, assessing teacher progress and the impact on student performance
  • Assisting the Head Teacher and Schools Director in the interviewing and selection of new teachers, particularly Head and Deputy for Secondary School. 

Requirements

Minimum qualifications (Must have)

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent in Primary or Secondary Education.

Experience

  • A minimum of 8-10 years experience in teaching
  • Experience in teacher training, mentorship and capacity-building
  • Familiarity with Ugandan culture and knowledge of local context (specifically with regards to the primary education system) considered an asset
  • Experience travelling or living in East Africa is an asset
