Russell Kennedy is a commercial law firm with over 235 people in Melbourne and Canberra. We are very proud of our culture and we work hard to recruit like-minded professionals that will suit the needs and expectations of our clients and our collegiate atmosphere.

At Russell Kennedy Lawyers we are committed to providing exceptional legal strategies and solutions to our clients, guided by market leading expertise across our sectors of focus.

We encourage a professional and committed work ethic, while recognising the importance of an enjoyable working environment and balanced lifestyle.

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Associate to our Pro Bono Practice on a maximum term basis (12-month parental leave replacement). The successful candidate will ideally have substantial experience in refugee and administrative law.

Russell Kennedy has developed a sector-leading pro bono practice, with particular expertise in refugee law and judicial review for humanitarian visa applicants.

The successful applicant will join a close-knit team of dedicated pro bono lawyers, committed to furthering access to justice for the most vulnerable in our community.

The role offers a mix of direct client work, mentoring and supervision of pro bono contributors across the firm, and the opportunity to participate in policy and advocacy efforts to further the interests of our most disadvantaged clients.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and advising on applications for onshore and offshore humanitarian visas.
  • Acting for refugee and asylum seeker clients in judicial review matters in the Federal courts.
  • Providing supervision and strategic advice to lawyers performing pro bono work across the firm.
  • Liaising with our community partners and referral bodies.
  • Contributing to relevant sector-wide working groups and consortiums on policy, advocacy and strategic litigation matters.

To be successful in this role you will have 4+ years post admission experience. It is essential that the candidate has substantial experience in refugee law, experience in file management, delegation and supervision. It is desirable that they have experience in administrative law litigation.

Russell Kennedy is committed to attracting the best talent available and is open to discussing flexible work arrangements for all of our listed vacancies.

Please note any offer of employment made by Russell Kennedy Lawyers to the successful candidate will be subject to a police check.
