  • Retail Sales Assistant & Gift Shop Co-ordinator
  • Permanent Part-time

Reverse Garbage Queensland is currently seeking an organised and energetic person to join our team in the multifaceted role of Retail Sales Assistant and Gift Shop Co-ordinator. It is a permanent part-time position for three 7.6 hour days per week (8.45am to 5.15pm) with the days likely to be Monday to Wednesday, though variations to this roster may be possible. The successful applicant will also be required to work an additional rotating Saturday shift every three weeks in sorting or sales as well as participate in other work of the co-operative.

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a not-for-profit re-use centre located in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. We collect high quality industrial discards from a wide range of industries around the Greater Brisbane Area, diverting them from landfill to make them available at low cost to the community through our warehouse at 20 Burke Street. We also operate an Environmental Arts Education Program using these salvaged materials that caters for all ages and operate a Gift Shop stocked with items made by local artisans who work with salvaged materials.

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a high level of customer service to our retail warehouse customers and performing cash handling and end-of-day reconciliation tasks at our sales counter. Whilst not engaged in serving customers, the successful applicant will perform tasks such as visual merchandising and stock arrangement in the gift shop, pricing and managing the gift shop inventory, liaising with and sourcing new gift shop suppliers and processing monthly Gift Shop supplier payments. The Gift Shop Co-ordinator is also rostered one office day (away from the sales counter) on the first Wednesday of each month to assist with Gift Shop administration tasks.

Selection Criteria:

Essential skills/experience:

  • Retail sales management/customer service experience
  • An active interest in art and/or craft practice and the growing ‘hand-made’ sector
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Good general fitness and dexterity
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to keep appropriate records in both paper and digital format
  • Knowledge of and commitment to environmental protection

Desirable but not essential skills/experience:

  • Graphic Design
  • Work in a community based organisation
  • Understanding of the philosophy and practice of consensus decision making
  • Ability to interpret financial reports and budgets
  • Ability to develop policies and procedures
  • Ability to assist with strategic planning

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a worker-run co-operative and applicants with an interest in becoming a member/director of the co-op in the long term will be favourably regarded.

Remuneration: This is a permanent part time position. The wage is $20.08/hr and is based on the General Retail Industry award. Normal award penalty rates apply for Saturday work.
