Reverse Garbage Queensland is a non-profit re-use centre located at 20 Burke Street in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. We collect high quality industrial discards from a wide range of industries and business around Brisbane, diverting them from landfill to make them available at low cost to the community through our retail warehouse.

We are currently seeking an experienced, well organised person to join our team and fill the combined role of HR Co-ordinator & Secretary. The successful candidate will also have a range of other manual duties in the co-op which will depend on the candidate’s capacities. We are seeking someone who is keen to make a positive contribution to a not-for-profit organisation, passionate about issues surrounding sustainability and waste reduction, and willing to get their hands dirty in the process.

The position consists of one day of combined HR & Secretarial office work and two days of manual duties that will be a mix drawn from the following:

  • Collection of donated materials from our suppliers in a light truck (truck licence not required – just a manual car licence).
  • Work in the sorting area of our warehouse processing and packaging donated materials.
  • Front counter retail sales work.

The specific mix will be determined through negotiation with the successful candidate and be respectful of their capacities. Applicants will also be required to work an additional day in our warehouse one Saturday every three to four weeks in a rotating roster in sorting or sales, as well as participate in other work of the co-operative from time to time.

Selection Criteria

Essential skills/experience:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to deal constructively with a range of Human Resources related issues
  • Performance review methods and techniques
  • Excellent organisational, scheduling and planning skills
  • Experience rostering, recruiting and training staff
  • Ability to develop policies and procedures
  • Ability to read and comprehend legal documents pertinent to the co-op including contracts & legislation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to correspond with a variety of external entities
  • An understanding of meeting processes and minute keeping
  • Ability to self direct and work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • A strong understanding of issues surrounding waste & resource use and a strong commitment to sustainability
  • Excellent computer skills including good typing skills and experience with common office productivity software
  • Manual dexterity and a good level of physical fitness

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Basic material handling skills and a willingness to get one's hands dirty
  • Ability to drive a light truck (3.2 tonne GVM) in a safe and responsible manner
  • Understanding of safe materials handling procedures and ability to manually load and unload items
  • Broad knowledge of the types of materials Reverse Garbage Queensland collects (plastics, timber, textiles etc.)
  • Retail sales/customer service experience including money handling/end of day procedures
  • Work in a community based organisation
  • Understanding of the philosophy and practice of consensus based decision making
  • Ability to interpret financial reports and budgets
  • Ability to assist with strategic planning

Remuneration: The wage is $20.79/hr and is based on the General Retail Industry award. Normal award penalty rates apply for Saturday work.
