Reverse Garbage Queensland is currently seeking an organised and energetic person to join our team in the multifaceted role of Communications & Marketing Co-ordinator. We are seeking someone with communications and marketing qualifications and/or experience who is keen to make a positive contribution to a unique and dedicated not-for-profit organisation and passionate about issues surrounding sustainability, the environment and waste reduction. This is a permanent part-time position of four days per week (7.6 hours per day).

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a not-for-profit re-use centre located in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. We collect high quality industrial discards from a wide range of industries around the Greater Brisbane Area, diverting them from landfill to make them available at low cost to the community through our warehouse at 20 Burke Street. We also operate an Environmental Arts Education Program using these salvaged materials that caters for all ages and operate a Gift Shop stocked with items made by local artisans who work with salvaged materials.

The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for co-ordinating our promotional and marketing activities as well as being the principal point of contact for communications with our community. The Communications & Marketing Co-ordinator reports directly to the Board of Directors. The four rostered days during the week will be fixed (8.45am to 5.15pm) though occasional variations, including weekend work, may be required if promotional opportunities arise at events such as festivals and conferences. The successful applicant will also be required to participate ina rotating Saturday shift, which is an additional day in our retail warehouse once every three to four weeks, as well as participate in other incidental work of the co-operative (answering phones, doing the dishes etc.).

Selection Criteria:

Essential requirements:

  • Ability to develop, implement and monitor the effectiveness of a strategic marketing plan which ensures that Reverse Garbage Queensland (RGQ) meets its sales objectives.
  • Ability to develop innovative, low-cost marketing and promotional campaigns.
  • Knowledge of communications and marketing industry practices and principles.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal communication and public speaking skills and ability to prepare and deliver engaging talks to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to use social media and e-newsletters to engage and motivate people to consider a “waste not, want not” lifestyle.
  • Ability to market RGQ's eco-art workshops through Eventbrite, Facebook, and other event websites.
  • Computer and file management skills including good typing skills and experience with common office software suites.
  • Ability to produce meaningful reports on marketing activities for presentation at Board meetings.
  • Ability to maintain and expand our organisational list of promotional channels and contacts.
  • Ability to identify and liaise with relevant contacts in both traditional and new media through media releases, etc.
  • Ability to self direct and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Understanding of issues surrounding waste, resource use and sustainability.
  • A strong commitment to environmental protection.

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Experience with photography and graphic design including Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Indesign)
  • Event/project promotion and management
  • Work in a community-based organisation
  • Understanding of the philosophy and practice of consensus decision making
  • Ability to interpret financial reports and budgets
  • Ability to develop policies and procedures.
  • Ability to assist with strategic planning

Reverse Garbage Queensland is a worker-run co-operative and applicants with an interest in becoming a member/director of the co-op in the long term will be favourably regarded.

Remuneration: This is a permanent part time position. The wage is $20.08/hr and is based on the General Retail Industry award. Normal award penalty rates apply for Saturday and Sunday work.
