Overview of East Timor Hearts Fund

East Timor Hearts Fund was established informally in September 2010 to identify, and arrange treatment in Australia for, young East Timorese people requiring life-saving heart procedures. The organisation currently aims to provide cardiac procedures in Australia for up to 20 patients each year.

Purpose of role

The Patient Support Officer – Sydney provides practical support in country to patients, their family members and interpreters including, but not limited to, assisting with grocery shopping, travel, etc.

Skills and attributes:

  • Cheerful, flexible and responsible outlook and approach
  • Self-motivation and willingness to take responsibility for tasks and self-direct work, with board support as needed
  • Good written and verbal communication skills; must be comfortable communicating (with assistance if needed) with people from Timor-Leste who may not speak English
  • Demonstrated interest in NGO work, particularly in Timor-Leste
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Driver's license highly desirable but not essential
  • Tetum language desirable but not essential.


  • Provide ETHF mobile telephone for patient use (and retrieve at the end of patient’s stay).
  • Provide verbal or written progress reports to the Patient Support Coordinator.
  • Arrange local transport (e.g. Myki/top up).
  • Assist and accompany the patient, family members and/or interpreter with transport for appointments and for grocery shopping.
  • Arrange phone card for ETHF issued patient mobile phone and liaise with volunteer coordinator to provide phone to patient and retrieve at end of visit.
  • Advise the patients, family members and/or interpreters of the dos and don’ts of travel and staying in Australia.
  • Liaise with Cultural Awareness Officer – Sydney when the need arises for translation.
