The Mental Health Law Centre is a Community Legal Centre which provides free legal services to clients where their matter is causally related to their mental health condition. It is a rewarding, community-based role where you will see directly the positive impact of the work MHLC does in the local community.

The role is varied and requires the delivery of accurate and timely administration services within the office, and personal support to the CEOs and Principal Legal Officer. You will be working closely with MHLC’s administration staff, lawyers and volunteers. It demands forward thinking, resourcefulness, initiative and a “can do” attitude.

General outline of position:

  • Assistance with the organisation and coordination of work flow, activities and meetings, including car and room bookings, to ensure that a high level of service is maintained within the Centre;
  • Maintain and update training registers
  • Answering the telephone, greeting visitors and handling enquiries as required
  • Maintaining appropriate levels of stationery and office equipment supplies; solving maintenance issues
  • Event and function coordination - arranging catering, technical support, and managing guest lists

This role is a fixed term, permanent part time position and is subject to ongoing funding. It is flexible, working four hours a day, 3 mornings per week, and would suit individuals with child-care commitments. Initially we envisage Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9:00am to 1:00pm, however this may be subject to change. We also need someone who is available to work extra hours when required and to cover leave periods. This role is a fixed term, part time position and is subject to ongoing funding.

Mental Health Law Centre actively encourages applications from all backgrounds, however regrettably there is no wheelchair access to the premises.

  • Minimum 2 years personal/administrative assistant experience
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Well-developed organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work effectively
  • Confidence in interacting with clients who may have mental health issues, both on the telephone and face-to-face
  • Demonstrated experience with MS Office and electronic record management systems; quick and efficient typing and word processing
  • Demonstrated experience with diary and travel management
  • Have the ability to take initiative, accept responsibility, work as part of a team and collaborate with other agencies and staff
