Are you the Independent Director we’re looking for?

Laynha is a well-established and reputable Indigenous organisation based in Yirrkala on the east coast of the Arnhem Land (near Nhulunbuy) which provides services to Yolngu residents in 30 Homelands. Our region is one of the most beautiful and vibrant areas in Australia and has excellent facilities.

We have now established the Ganybu Housing Aboriginal Corporation under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006. It is a commercially-oriented housing company with the aim of building affordable and quality housing for Indigenous people, designed by Indigenous people, using Indigenous employees and contractors. Backed by Laynha’s own funds derived from royalties, our goal is to re-invest the profit back into Indigenous housing, education and well-being initiatives in our region. We have a five-member Board and are now seeking two Independent Directors with exceptional business acumen to guide our venture. The initial term is two years.

What kind of person are you?

You have strong personal values such as compassion, a high level of personal integrity, a commitment to ethical behaviour and social justice. You can communicate cross-culturally with Indigenous people. You are confident, calm, self-resilient, independent thinking with a robust sense of humour and a willingness to learn. You aren't a "know-it-all" and you don't take yourself too seriously. You are level-headed, a prudent risk-taker with a strong adherence to effective corporate governance and strategic business decision-making.

What will I need to succeed?

You are someone who has extensive business experience, preferably in the finance or building and construction industries. You have an extensive network of contacts in the business world. You have the time to commit to developing Ganybu as the leading Indigenous housing company in Australia. You can attend quarterly meetings in Yirrkala (3 days round trip from any capital city). You can advocate on behalf of the corporation with business and government. You demonstrate sound and mature judgement in a complex and difficult environment. You are persistent and maintain a high degree of self-motivation when the going gets tough.
