An exciting opportunity available to join a project transforming the lives of women and the criminal justice system. Flat Out is a state-wide advocacy and support service for women (and their children) who have been criminalised. We are an independent, not for profit, community-based organisation that aims to prevent women from entering and returning to prison. We provide outreach support to the Victorian women’s prisons and work with women who have experienced incarceration, homelessness, family violence, mental health, and alcohol and other drug use.

Flat Out leads and participates in research and education to the broader community about women’s rights to live free from trauma, injustice and violence, and the issues that occur for women in the criminal justice system.

Women Transforming Justice project

We are partnering with Darebin Community Legal Centre and the Law and Advocacy Centre for Women to deliver the Women Transforming Justice (WTJ) project. This is an innovative pilot project funded by the Victorian Legal Services Board to provide an integrated service delivery model.

The project aims to keep women out of prison by linking women on remand with the WTJ project when they are first taken into custody, and addressing the drivers of their incarceration at an individual and systemic level.

The project team will also build the capacity of professionals working with women in the criminal justice system to understand the links between gender and women’s criminalisation by collecting data and information, developing and delivering training and education and contributing to the development of laws and policies.

The Position

We are seeking a Senior Outreach Support and Advocacy Worker to join the project. The senior worker will be integral to the project, working together with the Flat Out team and lawyer from the Law and Advocacy Centre for Women to provide flexible and holistic support to assist women to obtain bail and live safely and stably in the community. The Women Transforming Justice project manager will also assist the senior workers by providing project coordination and support.

Within this integrated service delivery model, the assertive outreach worker will provide personalised and planned outreach-based case management support and advocacy to women in their community of choice. Working from a client-centred approach, the senior worker will support women in relation to their housing, health and well-being, reunification with their children, relationships with family and community, financial security and legal concerns.

The position reports to the Team Leader, Flat Out.

Equal Opportunity Act 2010 – Human Rights List - Exemption - to employ Women Only (No: H154/2017).

Women with lived experience, Aboriginal women, CALD women and women from diverse communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
