Flat Out is a dynamic and innovative advocacy and support service for women 18+ (with and without children), who have been criminalised through the criminal justice and/or prison system in Victoria. Flat Out receives government funding and occasional project funds from various sources to enhance capacity to provide high quality, innovative and effective services and advocacy.

We primarily work with women experiencing the interconnection of criminalisation, homelessness and alcohol and other drug use.

Flat Out leads and participates in research and community education, seeking to inform the broader community and other service providers about the issues that occur for women in the criminal justice system. Through community involvement and education, advocacy and research, Flat Out maintains a strong voice in the prison abolition movement in Australia. We are positioned as a socially and economically viable alternative to prison.

The Outreach Support and Advocacy Worker operates within a team on an assertive outreach model providing personalised and planned case managed support and advocacy to women. Working from a client-centred approach; the role seeks to support women in areas such as housing, health (including alcohol and drug use and mental health), reunification with children, families and communities, financial security and addressing legal concerns.

Direct service and role activities

  • Provide case managed pre and post release prison advocacy and support to women 18+ (and their children) within the Flat Out client-centred support framework
  • Refer and support women 18+ to obtain appropriate housing, drug and alcohol treatment, community services and other relevant supports both in and outside the prison/s
  • Provide information and support relating to material aid, financial aid, legal services, counselling services, physical/mental/sexual health, education/employment and training and other relevant services and supports
  • Provide court support to women; (including advocating in court); writing a report or letter to the court
  • Advocate on behalf of women with services such as Centrelink, Department of Justice & Corrections, Family Support Services, Office of Housing, Department of Health and Human Services, drug and alcohol treatments services, health and mental health practitioners and other relevant services and supports
  • Visit women at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre and Tarrengower Women’s Prison
  • Administer HEF (Housing Establishment Fund) and other financial and material aid
  • Collect and record client data and information using the Specialist Homelessness Information Platform (SHIP), and in conjunction with the team contribute to writing of program reports for Flat Out Management Collective Board and external stakeholders and funders
  • Maintain accurate records, update in a timely manner, and ensure appropriate information is maintained consistent with relevant policies and procedures, to work within the requisite legislative and funding requirements at the highest professional level
  • Participate and contribute to case meetings, team meetings, bi-monthly management collective board meetings, and supervision, training and employee development opportunities
  • Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010, National Employment Standards and Flat Out Inc Policy and Procedure Manual

Role details

  • 0.8 EFT 60.8 hours (8 days) per fortnight
  • SCHCADS Award SACS Level 5, Pay Points 1 to 3 - $76,471 to $79,929, depending on experience. (Please note the salary quoted is fulltime, this position is 0.8EFT). Salary packaging of up to $15,900.00 is an additional benefit. Above award conditions include private use of vehicle and mobile phone
  • Over Award – Additional week annual leave with leave loading
  • All offers of employment at Flat Out Inc are subject to a six-month probationary period. The staff member will be asked to participate in an annual performance review linked to objectives set out for the position
  • The position reports to the Manager of Casework and Strategic Advocacy and is responsible to the Management Collective Board
