About Us

Flat Out is a state-wide advocacy and support service for women (and their children) who have been criminalised by the justice system. We are an independent, not for profit, community-based organisation that aims to prevent women from entering and returning to prison. We provide outreach support to the Victorian women’s prisons and work with women who have experienced incarceration, homelessness, family violence, mental health, and alcohol and other drug use.

Flat Out leads and participates in research and education to the broader community about women’s rights to live free from trauma, injustice and violence, and the issues that occur for women in the criminal justice system.

The Position

We are seeking an experienced manager to oversee the day-to-day work of our outreach program including two pilot projects. You will have strong abolitionist and feminist frameworks, be interested in developing a best practice working environment, and have experience providing supervision, building positive teams, program development, and providing secondary consult and advice to staff and other professionals.

You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, problem solving and people skills.

Now is an exciting time to be working in the criminal justice space with lots of opportunities to make a real difference. Flat Out has two new projects which you will be managing:

  • Women Transforming Justice - a partnership between Flat Out, Law and Advocacy Centre for Women and Darebin Legal Community Centre, providing dedicated legal and outreach support to women in custody to obtain bail.
  • Family Violence Justice Project - a project on family violence and the criminalisation of women, focusing on capacity building, advocacy and social change.

This position reports to the Executive Officer and will work with the Executive Officer to identify and lead strategic advocacy for the organisation.

Experience and knowledge of case management principles and the homelessness sector are essential.
