Good On You’s Mission
Good On You helps shoppers make choices that are better for people, the planet and animals. The Good On You Ethical Shopping App helps you check how a brand is doing on issues you care about like the treatment of workers, child labour, climate change, chemical pollution and animal rights.
The app gives you access to the information you need, where and when you need it. It can show you similar but better rated brands, where to buy products near you, and how to use your voice to influence brands’ ethics. Currently focused on fashion and clothing, Good On You rates more than 1,000 clothing, footwear, and accessory labels based on the ethics behind their production process. Cosmetics and personal care brands will be added soon.
The Good On You app for iPhone and Android is used by more than 35,000 people in Australia and New Zealand and is soon to be launching in North America.
Purpose of this role
Good On You is valuable to users because it helps them find new sustainable and ethical brands that meet their needs or make them feel excited about ethical fashion. The ratings are an essential component of the Good On You app and allows users to assess if a brand is acting on the issues he/she cares about. The accuracy of the brand ratings helps ensure that users have confidence in the information we provide them.
The objective of this role is to help us rate the fashion brands that our users are after and allow them to have all the information they need to make better shopping choices.
What you will do
You'll research and verify brands according to criteria developed by us in conjunction with reliable expert sources. This involves looking over information provided by our ethical detectives, deciding if more information is needed and following the verifying process to give accurate ratings for each brand.
You will also create rating summaries to help users better understand each brand rating.
Who will you work with?
You will be part of a small Melbourne based team and supported by one of our senior staff.
The Good On You team is made up of eight staff based in Melbourne and Sydney, plus volunteers and interns working in Melbourne, Sydney and remotely. We have a team of up to 50 volunteers who work remotely to create content and help research brands as Ethical Detectives.
You’ll have the opportunity to learn from our passionate team with extensive experience in the consumer movement, business, the not for profit sector, software engineering and media.
Who we are looking for (essential)
You will be right for this role if you:
- Have good research skills and attention to detail and able to analyse and interpret information.
- Have the ability to write succinctly and accurately.
- Are willing and able to learn new processes.
- Are interested in ethical consumption and sustainability.
- Have a passionate desire to help consumers make better shopping choices for the planet, people and animals.
- Are reliable and accountable and work in a planned and structured way.
- Are able to start in early to mid-January.
- Are willing to commit to 1-day (7 hours) per week at our Melbourne office for a period of 10-12 weeks.
Please note: We will only be able to confirm both the location and the day of volunteering/internship in early January. Please ensure you identify which day(s) - Tues, Weds, Thurs or Fri - you are available when applying.
What’s in it for you?
We’ll help you learn new skills in exchange for your commitment. You’ll get experience in a fast-paced start-up environment with a social mission and the chance to be part of a project that aims to help millions of people both in Australia and around the world.
It is a great chance to develop your writing and build your portfolio as well as develop your social research skills.
This is a great opportunity to contribute to a cause you are passionate about while learning skills for your own later social impact ventures.
Please note that internships are unpaid. However, the possibility to complete university placement may be supported.
Why is this important?
Our goal is to make ethical shopping as easy as 'regular' shopping, and for millions of Australians to avoid environmental degradation, unfair and unsafe working conditions and harm to animals when they make everyday consumer decisions.
Who are we?
Good On You is a project of Ethical Consumers Australia, a not for profit organisation that aims to make it easy for people to make consumer choices that match their values. We also publish the Good On You newsletter, which gives weekly tips and advice on ethical fashion, sustainable living and updates on brand ratings.
As an alternative to an internship, you could provide similar assistance to Good On You as a volunteer, however, similar commitments in relation to hours and duration would be needed.
