Criminal Law Governance and Resources is seeking a motivated and capable person with highly developed analytical and research skills to lead a dedicated team that develops key legal projects and for providing policy and legal advice in areas such as access to justice and legal assistance.

About us

Criminal Law Governance and Resources provides support to the Deputy Secretary, Secretary and Attorney-General regarding the Attorney-General's criminal justice related first law officer responsibilities. First law officer responsibilities include prerogatives and petitions of mercy, expungement applications, Council of Attorneys-General's matters, ex gratia assistance and inter jurisdictional prisoner transfers.

About the role

As the Manager, Legal and Policy, you will be responsible for a leading dedicated team that develops and leads key legal projects and for providing policy and legal advice in areas such as access to justice, prisoner related matters and legal assistance. You will  lead the tema to research, consult and develop policy options and to support the delivery of the teams key responsibilities.

In the role, you will:

  • Lead a small team responsible for developing evidence based advice and briefings to the Attorney-General and Government
  • Deliver the Attorney-General's criminal justice related First Law Officer functions
  • Represent the Attorney-General and the Department's senior executives on specialist committees
  • Contribute to a positive work environment which promotes a partnership approach to people management, enhances morale and respects diversity
  • Develop responses to complex correspondence for the Attorney-General and senior executives.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • Bachelor of Law or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution and eligibility to apply for a practising certificate
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas of law: criminal law and procedure; public and administrative law
  • Experience in developing strategic and policy frameworks based on expert knowledge in the relevant field
  • Experience in developing business plans, policy frameworks and briefs on highly complex issues providing expert analysis
  • Strong oral communication and consultation skills.
