Consumer Action Law Centre has an opportunity for an experienced Policy Officer to join our Policy and Campaigns team.
Consumer Action Law Centre is an independent, not-for profit consumer organisation based in Melbourne. We work to advance fairness in consumer markets, particularly for disadvantaged and vulnerable consumers, through financial counselling, legal advice and representation, and policy work and campaigns. We have a national reach through our deep expertise in consumer law and policy and direct knowledge of the consumer experience of modern markets.
The Policy and Campaigns team builds on the experiences of our clients which forms the evidence base for our advocacy efforts, and engages with government, regulators, media, industry and community in pursuit of enforcement action, law reform and sound policy for low income and vulnerable consumers.
You will have a tertiary degree in law, public policy or equivalent field, together with a demonstrated commitment to advancing the public interest and social justice. You will have significant experience in stakeholder management and advocacy and/or policy development at a national level.
Key responsibilities in this role include, but are not limited to:
- Acting as a subject matter expert in energy consumer policy, law and regulation
- Coordinating the development of policy positions relating to matters that advance the interest of low income and vulnerable energy consumers;
- Undertaking policy research and preparing high quality briefs, reports, articles, fact sheets and other materials in support of policy initiatives;
- Preparing submissions as part of relevant government and regulatory processes so that Consumer Action’s position is communicated and the Centre is recognised as a key stakeholder and credible expert in these processes;
- Representing Consumer Action at relevant consultative forums and work co-operatively with identified stakeholders so that Consumer Action contributes to policy development and is seen as a credible voice in public debate on issues of importance to low income and vulnerable consumers.
This is a full-time role located at our offices in Melbourne CBD. The salary range offered shall be between $76,500 and $83,000 commensurate with experience, plus superannuation. Consumer Action Law Centre offers salary packaging therefore depending upon personal financial circumstances the value of the salary may be equivalent to up to approximately $9,000 higher.
Key selection criteria
Policy Analysis & Research: Demonstrated experience in the analysis, development and evaluation of public policy – can synthesise information from diverse sources to produce high quality policy analysis and advice in a time-pressured environment, and has demonstrated experience in initiating and undertaking policy research. Specialist knowledge and experience in energy consumer policy and regulation would be an advantage.
Intellectual leadership: Curious to understand the multiple dimensions and uncertainties of the problems facing low income and vulnerable energy consumers, passionate about collaboratively developing and achieving innovative, practical policy solutions, and motivated to continually update knowledge and engage in critical reflection.
Communication: Communicates in a clear and interesting way; understands the target audience and the objectives of the communication; uses feedback to refine communication; proven capacity to confidently undertake public speaking and represent the organisation through public consultation and media avenues, and effectively uses online and other forms of public engagement.
Teamwork: Cooperates and works well with others; shows consideration, concern and respect for others’ feelings and ideas; accommodates and works well with the different working styles of others, treating all people with dignity and respect.
Project management: Demonstrated track record in the ability to design, develop, and implement complex projects; monitors and evaluates performance of projects against objectives and manages issues and roadblocks to ensure objectives are met. Manages time effectively and can deal with competing priorities under pressure.
Integrity: Driven to pursue excellence; works effectively with high degree of autonomy and accountability; self-motivated and can demonstrate initiative.
