The Brown Nurses is an independent Ministry of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor, continuing over 100 years of care for the most disadvantaged and marginalised in the community. 

Support is offered in line with the charism of Eileen O’Connor and the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church, which upholds the dignity of the individual and their right to fullness of life.

Many of our clients live with debilitating physical and mental illnesses, or are at risk of homelessness. Being in the care of the Brown Nurses may be their last opportunity to live independently.

We are currently based in Glebe NSW and our service area encompasses City of Sydney LGA and parts of Inner West Council.

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria

  • Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia
  • Current Nursing Registration (Division 1) with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Minimum five (5) years post-registration medical/surgical experience in an acute setting
  • Current NSW driver's licence (Class C)
  • Commitment to holistic nursing practice
  • Ability to work effectively within a small team


  • Experience in community nursing (generalist or mental health), addiction medicine, homeless health, and/or managing clients with complex health needs will be a considerable advantage.

Contract period

Twelve (12) months from date of commencement. Subject to satisfactory performance, the position may then become permanent.


  • Full time: Monday to Friday – 0800 to 1600 (no weekend work)
  • Part-time: Minimum 4 days per week
