The organisation

Diaspora Action Australia (DAA) is an independent, non-government organisation which works with diaspora communities in Australia who promote peace, development, humanitarian response and human rights in their countries of origin.

They do this by:

  • Supporting diaspora community initiatives;
  • Providing resources, information and training;
  • Facilitating dialogue and shared learning;
  • Building networks;
  • Amplifying diaspora voices at local, national and international levels; and
  • Advocating for the inclusion of diasporas in policy dialogue.

The role

Reporting to the Board, you will be responsible for the delivery of DAA’s Strategic Plan and for its operational management. This will include

  • Responsibility for monitoring DAA’s operating environment;
  • Identifying strategic risks and opportunities;
  • Developing and implementing appropriate responses;
  • Leading on relationships with diaspora community leaders, government stakeholders, international agencies and decision makers; and
  • Leading and managing the DAA’s staff and volunteers.

Experience and skills required

You possess

  • A background in international development, human rights and/or refugee issues; and
  • The demonstrated ability to engage in the public policy process, including experience in public representation and advocacy.

Your experience and skills include

  • Networking and relationship/partnership development;
  • Stakeholder management;
  • Strategic planning;
  • Monitoring and evaluation processes;
  • Skills in project management, including delivery and oversight of contracts;
  • Financial and risk management, ideally applied in the not-for-profit context; and
  • Identification and implementation of new business and income generation opportunities.

Demonstrated experience in working with communities from diverse cultural backgrounds, and familiarity with community development approaches will be highly regarded.
