Animals Australia works tirelessly to protect the most abused and defenceless animals in our society. Our award winning national campaigns and unique investigative work have awakened millions to the cruel practices of factory farming and live animal export, while pressuring industry and government to take much needed action. Each victory for animals is underpinned by a strong and proactive supporter base.
This position offers a dedicated animal advocate the chance to play an important role in Australia's leading animal protection organisation, Animals Australia. The full time position offers the opportunity to develop diverse advocacy/campaign skills in an exciting and challenging environment. The successful applicant will work closely with Animals Australia's Campaign Manager to manage and develop Animals Australia's youth program (both online and offline) - Unleashed - to empower and support the next generation of young Australians (approx 13 - 26yrs) to make cruelty-free choices for animals, and to build and nurture a network of young activists speaking up for animals.
Duties:
- Manage and develop Unleashed's e-communications schedule.
- Keep abreast of animal welfare developments, in particular Animals Australia campaigns and develop creative ways for young people to support Animals Australia's campaign objectives.
- Help to develop creative and engaging Unleashed-specific campaigns that are relevant to young people.
- Draft written content for web and manage the input of other staff to consistently develop and publish high quality written e-communications (including, but not limited to: web features, blogs, action alerts, e-mail broadcasts, etc).
- Identify and develop contacts with artists/brands/businesses/etc. that can assist Unleashed through interviews, giveaways, cross-promotions, etc.
- Actively engage in Unleashed's online community, incl. helping moderate the Unleashed forum.
- Identify, organise and lead volunteers in outreach initiatives to raise awareness about Unleashed and animal issues amongst a youth audience.
- Keep abreast of trends in youth culture and online communications to identify strategies and opportunities that can enhance our youth program.
- Provide regular reports on Unleashed, along with ideas to improve our approach.
- Other tasks as directed.
Selection Criteria
Professional Skills
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong understanding of animal protection issues in Australia.
- Strong understanding of effective advocacy in an animal protection context.
- Activism/outreach experience.
- Leadership skills and the ability to manage volunteers.
- The ability to write engaging content for a range of audiences (especially youth).
- A good understanding of web media, in general, and experience in using web based applications to publish online content, (as well as a readiness to learn basic HTML for content formatting).
- Strong familiarity with online social mediums, including Facebook and Twitter.
Desirable Skills: (non-essential to apply)
- Familiarity with Unleashed, and in particular its online presence.
- Web design skills (such as basic HTML, basic photo editing).
- Sales or customer service skills or experience interacting with the public.
