The Service

Established in 2006, headspace offers a 'one stop shop' for young people aged 12 -25 and their families who may be experiencing mental health difficulties. It provides an opportunity for young people to receive help early and promotes a 'no wrong door' approach to supporting young people and their families through the provision of GPs, counsellors, Alcohol & other Drug workers and Vocational and Educational support.

headspace YEPP is a comprehensive Youth Early Psychosis Programs (YEPP) being delivered across both sites. Through this initiative, young people and their families have timely access to comprehensive evidence-based early psychosis services.

The Role

As the Community Awareness Worker, you will work with the headspace manager to review; coordinate and implement the headspace Elsternwick Community Awareness and Engagement Strategy.

In this role, you will provide community awareness, education, consultation and liaison with a range of professionals regarding youth mental health, general health, social welfare, and drug and alcohol issues. Aspects of your role will include:

  • Increasing mental health literacy among young people, their friends and families, and the broader community
  • Supporting initiatives which encourage a whole of community response to the health needs of young people in the region
  • Encouraging local youth involvement in the operations and governance of headspace Elsternwick
  • Supporting the implementation and management of a headspace Elsternwick social media and web-based presence
  • Reducing stigma and discrimination associated with seeking help for mental health, alcohol or other drug problems

Skills and Experience

  • Approved tertiary qualifications in relevant discipline and eligibility for membership with appropriate professional body if required
  • Appropriate work visa
  • Current Victorian Driver's License
  • Current Working with Children Check or willing to obtain one
  • Be willing to undergo a Background Check
