The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union campaigns for social and economic change on behalf of our diverse membership. We are looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person to join our award-winning national communications team.

You’ll probably know us from some of our attention-grabbing national campaigns like “Streets Free Summer”, “Boycott CUB”, and “Build our Subs Here”. More likely, you’ve just noticed our unhinged Twitter presence. Everyday, our small team takes on some of the country’s most powerful interest groups and we win.

In 2018, we won the ACTU Award for Best Union Communications Team in the country and with you as part of our team, we’d like to win the 2019 as well.

On a typical day, you’ll be:

  • Creating content for social media
  • Writing emails to members and supporters
  • Visiting workplaces and union events to provide communications support
  • Managing and updating our website and CRM
  • Presenting to and training our industrial staff on the most up-to-date communications tools that can assist their work in organising workplaces
  • Creating leaflets, posters and merchandise for our member-led industrial campaigns.
  • Creating digital advertising campaigns to our members and supporters
  • Developing campaigning and communications priorities with the NSW State Secretary

We are looking for someone who is passionate about trade unionism and wants to change the world. Ideally, you’ll have worked with unions or in the NGO sector before. You’ll have experience in digital campaigning and be proficient on a range of design and video editing software.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Develop and execute communications and media strategy, under the direction of the NSW State Secretary;
  • Basic event organisation and management;
  • Develop content to increase the union’s social media engagement;
  • Work with stakeholders to develop and support the branch’s industrial, community, and political campaigning efforts;
  • Support the campaign work of the NSW Secretary and Organisers

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience in working in the media, communications and/or campaigns field, preferably in a trade union, political or not-for-profit organisation;
  • Experience in using social media for campaign purposes, including developing content and multimedia and growing and maintaining a Facebook community;
  • Proficiency in Adobe suite design software including InDesign and Illustrator
  • Proficiency in video shooting and editing and for social media

Highly Desirable

  • Nationbuilder website and email experience

Experience working with the union movement is desirable but not essential.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Understanding of the Australian union movement and the Australian political environment
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute successful media and campaign strategies;
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise work flow in a busy environment;
  • Capacity to problem solve, exercise judgement and manage a variety of stakeholders;
  • Ability to work independently, to plan ahead and be pro-active;
  • Ability to work with a range of people and manage competing interests;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to manage time and budgets;

Other information

  • A driver’s license is highly desirable
  • May require regional and interstate travel

Salary and Package commensurate with experience.
