About the Organisation

AHCWA is the peak body for the 22 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) in Western Australia. We are an evolving organisation that acts as a forum to lead the development of Aboriginal Health policy, to influence and monitor performance across the health sector, to advocate for and support community development and capacity building in Aboriginal Communities.

We advocate for the rights and entitlements of all Aboriginal people throughout Western Australia, at a local, regional, State and National level.

About the Opportunity 

AHCWA has an exciting opportunity for a Tobacco Action Worker to join our team. With part time hours (four days per week, Monday - Thursday) on offer, this is a great chance to gain work/life balance within a supportive family friendly organisation!

Working within the Health Promotions team your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing local health promotion activities such as, community forums, supporting creation of smoke-free homes and workplaces, sharing information about smoking cessation, to increase community understanding of the dangers of smoking, benefits of cessation and benefits of smoke-free environments
  • Delivery of regional smoking prevention and promote cessation social marketing campaigns and events
  • Promoting smoking cessation and support programs to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, and referring people to other health programs
  • Working in partnership with the network of Tobacco Action Workers in the region, with the State-based mentor as appropriate, and with the broader national network coordinated by the National Coordinator
  • Collecting data to assist in the evaluation of the COAG National Partnership Agreement on Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health Outcomes
  • Promoting and supporting smoke-free workplace strategies in the AHCWA and exemplify non-smoking and quit smoking behaviours

To be successful in this role you will have an understanding of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Confidence to take on and manage the health promotion social media is a must.

Most importantly, you must be able to effectively communicate, promote and uphold AHCWA initiatives and values.
