The Race Discrimination Team undertakes a program of policy, project, education and public awareness work under the Commission’s National Anti-Racism Strategy including a national anti-racism campaign and initiatives to progress a National Anti-Racism Framework.

The Commission has recently been given funding to deliver a program of anti-racism work to support Muslim, Palestinian, Arab, Jewish and other communities in Australia affected by the Hamas-Israel conflict.

Purpose of the position

The successful application will:

  • Develop, plan, execute and evaluate a time sensitive awareness campaign to combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian racism and hate with tailored anti-racism content, including through Commission campaign and other channels.
  • Coordinate and prepare all communication materials and ensure they meet objectives, and are targeted effectively to campaign audiences.

Key responsibilities

Develop and implement public awareness campaign plan

  • Develop and execute an anti-racism public awareness campaign for communities affected by the Israel – Hamas conflict across multiple channels that include paid, earned and owned strategies.
  • Develop campaign key messages, identify audiences and establish an appropriate mix of channels and activities to reach them.
  • In consultation with the Strategic Communications Team identify proactive media opportunities and develop responses to reactive media enquiries.
  • Ensure campaign activities are integrated across Commission channels.
  • Monitor and evaluate the results of campaign activities.

Leadership

  • Set the campaign objectives and direction and provide advice to internal stakeholders including the Race Discrimination Commissioner and the Commission Executive on the campaign’s program of work.
  • Plan and manage campaign budget and campaign plan.
  • Manage the procurement and engagement of relevant external suppliers and vendors in accordance with guidelines as required.
  • Provide strategic advice on the best use of resources to achieve campaign objectives.
  • Manage the Communications Officer.

Content creation

  • Write high-quality, engaging and on-brand content for a variety of traditional, digital and social platforms and channels, tailored to a range of audiences, and ensure a consistent and appropriate style and tone of voice is applied across all communication outputs.

  • Oversee the creation of multimedia content where required, including engaging designers, videographers and photographers.

Build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships

  • Build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders including negatively racialised communities affected by the Middle East conflict.
  • Ensure key senior internal stakeholders are regularly briefed about campaign activities, risks and mitigations.
  • Collaborate with internal subject matter experts and personnel (eg Strategic Communications Team) to ensure effective delivery of the campaign and leveraging of existing channels and networks.

Key capabilities and role requirements

Professional knowledge and skills

  • Demonstrated experience in successful hands-on implementation of communication campaigns and activities.
  • Knowledge of race, racism and anti-racism in the Australian context.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing communications support on sensitive issues in a complex operating environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing social media channels to boost reach and engagement, include paid campaigns, and experience in the use of analytics to measure the effectiveness of social media activity.
  • Superior written communication skills, with a track record of writing across a variety of different media and audiences, and an ability to articulate complex information in an accessible and engaging way.

Experience, qualifications and accreditations

  • Experience or familiarity with CMS systems eg Drupal.
  • Experience in social media management platforms eg. Loomly, Hootsuite
  • Experience in email marketing platforms eg. Mailchimp
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva or other multimedia editing software.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing campaigns and / or public awareness initiatives.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline eg communications, journalism, marketing or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in delivering communications campaigns in negatively racialised communities is desirable.
  • Experience in anti-racism campaigns or education initiatives is desirable.
