About Landcare NT

Landcare NT is the Northern Territory’s (NTs) peak body for community-led landcare. Landcare NT helps build knowledge and skills in sustainable land and water management, develops and delivers local environmental projects, and strengthens community landcare group resources and resilience. Landcare NT currently has 22 member groups representing over 730 volunteers in urban, rural and remote communities across the NT. Community landcare engages in a diverse range of activities including native plant revegetation, weed removal, feral animal control, litter removal, fire mitigation and management, cultural land management, community engagement and education, and research. Landcare NT is committed to strengthening and growing community landcare, with a focus on inclusivity and diversity in community participation to maintain and improve the health of the NTs natural environment and working landscapes.

About the role

This role will suit a dynamic individual with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, who has a creative ‘can-do’ attitude and is passionate about supporting and growing community led environmental action in the NT. Applicants with a background in one or more of the following fields are encouraged to apply: natural resource management, community / youth services, education and training, community development and project management.

Key Responsibilities Include

The Community Engagement and Development Officer will support a range of key projects and services including:

Darwin Harbour Catchment Waterways Project

  • Facilitate community volunteer action to deliver on-ground activities which establish and improve riparian and aquatic habitat and enhance biodiversity (i.e. weed and litter management and riparian revegetation).
  • Facilitate community awareness, education and events highlighting the importance of healthy waterways and enabling community access and enjoyment of nature.
  • Support community input into Project Information Management System and online community portal.
  • Grow the volunteer network to sustain community environmental action in caring for local lands and waterways

Native Flora and Fauna Biodiversity Science Education Program

  • Manage the delivery and evaluation of this program in 25 primary schools across the Top End.
  • Assist in developing a sustainable business model to grow the school based education program and secure ongoing funding.
  • Strengthen relationships with local students, teachers, schools and community stakeholders to establish a youth landcare group/s.

Community Landcare Engagement

  • Engage with community landcare to provide information, advice and practical assistance with their activities.
  • Assist the establishment of new community landcare groups, with key focus on youth groups.
  • Support the development and delivery of ‘Landcare Builds Skills’ online and in person training on needs identified by community landcare.
  • Facilitate partnerships with community groups, industry bodies and government to deliver community engagement and education activities and local environmental projects.

Organisational Activities

  • Support the advocacy and promotion of Landcare NT and community landcare activities at the local and Territory government levels.
  • Support day to day running of Landcare NT projects and services (as required).

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Relevant formal qualifications or experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships across a range of audiences.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, and confidence using diverse social media platforms.
  • Experience developing and facilitating community engagement activities.
  • Confidence in public speaking, delivering presentations, and event delivery.
  • High level organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesise information and think and act strategically.
  • Able to work as part of a team and autonomously.
  • Current NT ‘C’ Class Driver’s License with a reliable vehicle for use in the role (travel will be reimbursed)
  • Current Working with Children Clearence (Ochre card) or willingness to obtain.
  • Australian Citizenship or evidence of Permanent Residency Status.

Desirable

  • Experience working with young people, schools and / or youth services.
  • Experience working with volunteer groups and / or community landcare.
  • Experience planning, developing and delivering community projects and / or events
