Job Description

Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisation currently seeking to fill the following vacancy within our Child, Youth and Family Support Services division. The Kalwun Child, Youth and Family Support Services division administers the Family Wellbeing Service, Family Participation Program, Early Learning Program and the Kinship and Foster Care programs within the South East Qld region.

About the Role

The Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making (AFLDM) program is based on traditional family values where the responsibility for bringing up children is shared by parents together with extended family and community and guided by the wisdom and experience of elders.

AFLDM encourages family members, extended family, Elders, Significant others in the child's life and where appropriate the child and/or young person, to meet and make decisions about the safety and wellbeing of children and/or young people who are involved in the Child Protection system.

As a Family Connections Worker (FPP), you will work collaboratively with practitioners and teams to strengthen case practice with Aboriginal children and families, in order to provide effective service delivery and to support other practitioners. This position is responsible for co-convening Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making meetings for Aboriginal clients to develop plans to bring about the changes necessary to ensure the safety, stability and development of Aboriginal children and young people and to promote the achievement of case plan objectives within specified timeframes. This is a full-time position at our Burleigh office.

Position Duties

  • You will support the Senior FLDM Facilitator in all FLDM processes and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate client records and collect complete and accurate data as required for reporting and evaluation purposes.
  • Maintain a high level of skill in required computer packages and databases relevant to the position.
  • Engage and educate families and the community on the purpose, process and positive outcomes achieved through Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making.
  • To identify and work cooperatively with support services that could be engaged to support AFLDM case plans (e.g. Health services, Family wellbeing etc.).
  • Actively support every client to engage with and fully participate in a therapeutic program and achieve positive outcomes.
  • Maintain a caseload as allocated and participate in direct client activities and management of other work related tasks as required.
  • Participate in documentation audits on a quarterly basis inclusive of case notes, screenings, assessments, support plans and evaluation tools.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development, monitoring and evaluation of the ATSIFLDM program.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage and extensive community and cultural connectedness.
  • An awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures and the historical and contemporary issues relevant to the needs of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients, and proven capacity to communicate appropriately.
  • Knowledge of child protection issues, legislation and requirements and relevant issues specific to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and families an advantage, but, not required.
  • Time management skills.
  • Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention or similar an advantage, but, not required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, use of contemporary office equipment and data entry.

  • This position requires the successful applicant to satisfy a national criminal history check and hold a current drivers' license.
  • A Blue Card for working with children is a mandatory requirement. The 'No Card No Start' law applies to this position - a Blue Card must be obtained prior to commencement.
