ABOUT THE ROLE

As a senior lawyer at HUB, you will play a role in improving access to justice through direct legal practice, community legal education, advocacy, and mentorship. They key responsibilities are to:

  • Provide comprehensive legal services in family law, domestic and family violence, child protection, and other areas relevant to people experiencing disadvantage and participate in HUB’s court rosters for domestic and family violence and child protection duty lawyer services.
  • Develop and conduct community legal education programs tailored for diverse groups and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the identification of systemic issues arising from our legal practice work and support HUB’s law reform and advocacy work as required.
  • Take a leadership role in supervising and mentoring early career lawyers, volunteer lawyers and law students, ensuring quality legal assistance and supporting professional development.

What you'll bring to the role:

  1. Legal Experience: An unrestricted practising certificate plus considerable experience in providing legal advice, casework, and representation, primarily in family law and family violence. Additional experience in areas of law particularly relevant to people experiencing disadvantage, such as domestic and family violence, child protection, and general civil law, is highly regarded. Domestic & Family Violence and/or Child Protection Duty Lawyer accreditation or ability to quickly obtain is required.
  2. Commitment to Social Justice: Strong proven commitment to social justice, reflected in past professional roles or volunteer engagements that focus on community service and advocacy.
  3. Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, including those who may have experienced violence/trauma, people from non-English speaking backgrounds, people with disabilities, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  4. Team Collaboration and Leadership: Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage own workload, set priorities, and meet deadlines, both independently and as part of a small team. Includes taking initiative, accepting responsibility, and contributing to a positive work environment. Experience in supervising and mentoring staff, particularly early career and volunteer lawyers, is highly regarded.
  5. Advocacy and Education: Experience or demonstrated capability in contributing to law reform, community legal education, and policy submissions. Ability to work collaboratively with team members and other organisations to contribute to systemic law and policy reform is essential.
