About the Canberra Environment Centre

We are an environmental education centre that empowers people to create a sustainable future for the Canberra Community. We are located at the Heritage site of Gungaderra Homestead, Harrison. The premises include a community workshop and meeting space, environmental library and resources, a teaching and learning garden and a community bike workshop.

About the Communications Officer:

This is a part time role of 6 hours per week, with flexibility regarding remote work options.

The Communications Officer will facilitate learning and connection through online channels including social media management for Canberra Environment Centre.

Coordinating regular (eg weekly) social media posts across Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, the Communications Officer will play a pivotal role within our small team.

Sharing sustainability information, ensuring CEC events are promoted with a warm, approachable and trusted tone, and creating appealing, creative visuals on Canva will all be a part of the role.

Responsible for maintaining our website and keeping event information looking good and up to date the Communications Officer will welcome first time visitors to our website and social media channels. Collaborate with the project officer and the Executive Director to promote the CEC and grow the number and impact of interactions with the community.

The Canberra Environment Centre aims to provide high quality information on all aspects of sustainable living. We aim for our programs to be engaging, accessible and hands-on. The Communications Officer is more than an administrative assistant- this role is integral to the accessibility and impact of environmental resources and education for the Canberra community.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining CEC social media, including Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin
  • Social media maintenance includes: post engaging content regularly eg weekly, respond to enquiries, create events
  • Create Canva images for event promotion and to share information
  • Maintain/update website as needed (Squarespace)
  • Host/provide technical support during online workshops (eg quarterly)
  • Assist with online monthly newsletter preparation and distribution
  • Assist with email communication
  • Collaborate with other community organisations to provide big-impact programs for the region
  • Provide follow-up engagement with participants through online surveys and report on findings in collaboration with the Project Officer
  • Assist in other operational matters as directed

Selection criteria:

  • Proven ability to communicate stories of collective climate action
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to work with limited supervision, and an ability to meet deadlines
  • Understanding of Facebook Business Manager, Canva, and content performance reporting.
  • Details oriented and a keen eye for design.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, stakeholder engagement abilities, and a proactive mindset towards industry shifts and evolving digital landscapes.
  • Skills in consultation with community groups and membership-based organisations highly regarded

Applied knowledge of one or more of the CEC’s areas of educational behaviour change: local food, waste management, sustainable energy, building community and/or biodiversity.

  • A willingness to learn and develop knowledge in the above areas
  • An ability to share skills

Proven ability to work within a team:

  • Ability to accept feedback and direction
  • Capacity to support other employees within a small team
  • Ability to perform administrative duties
