Outline & Purpose of Role:

Australia for UNHCR is the national partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency. Australia for UNHCR advocates and raises funds for UNHCR’s global operations. Established in 2000 as part of a global fundraising network, the organisation has raised more than $450 million from a broad network of individuals, community and corporate partners.

The Senior Media and Communications Manager works closely with the Head of Communication & Public Affairs (HOCPA) and Content Manager to drive the organisation’s brand building and convert new supporters to fundraising.

This role requires strong strategic skills to guide our many communication channels, increase our profile and deepen our base of support. It also requires effective project management and multitasking across traditional media, social media, events and other channels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute communications strategy in order to build the organisation’s brand and encourage donations
  • Work with the Multimedia Producer to create original and compelling video content for traditional and social media
  • Drive and oversee the roll-out of the organic social media strategy
  • Build relationships with journalists and look for opportunities to pitch stories to media
  • Support fundraising and philanthropy teams to create bespoke content in line with their requirements and quarterly appeals
  • Assist with internal communications activities when required
  • Work closely with Ambassadors and influencers, finding media opportunities for them and helping them to prepare for these activities
  • Maintain proactive and reactive messages and positioning for organisation-wide use, including emerging issues and opportunities
  • Manage Social Media Creative Coordinator and Multimedia Producer

The successful applicant will possess the following attributes:

  • Experience developing and implementing PR/communications plans
  • Experience in video production
  • Good contacts within the Australian media
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to liaise with and engage stakeholders and third-party suppliers
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in media, marketing or public relations
  • Strong understanding of Australian media and social media
  • A strong commitment to human rights, international affairs and UNCHR’s work with refugees and displaced people
